Genesis 12-26

Abram was from the line of Shem who was favored by God.

The three-fold promise God makes with Abram (Gen. 12:2-3)

  1. A great nation (land)
  2. His name great (royal dynasty)
  3. Blessing on all communities (worldwide blessing)

These three promises will be made into covenants in later chapters.

A covenant is the way in which God fathers His people. Essentially, it is God telling His children He is their God and claiming the people are His children.

Fulfillment of the three promises

Promise Covenant made
Land Gen. 15:17-18
Royal Dynasty Gen. 17:4-8
World-wide blessing Gen. 22:15-18

Since the final promise and covenant dealing with world-wide blessing will be the final covenant God makes with mankind, we see similarities in what happened in the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Gen. 22:4 On the third day… What other event occurred on the third day? Resurrection.

Gen. 22:6 Wood on the shoulders of Isaac. Who carried the wood on His shoulder? Christ

Gen. 22:7-8 God will provide the lamb for sacrifice. John the Baptist announced Christ as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”

Gen.22:14 On the mountain God provides. This is Mt. Moriah. Christ died on Mt. Calvary which is one of the hills of Moriah..
